How to identify an unknown Wi-Fi device with an iPhone
Connect your iPhone to the Wi-Fi network you manage, scan it with NetGuard, and compare an unfamiliar device’s name, IP address and advertised services with your own equipment. An unknown label alone is not evidence of an intruder. Confirm what it is through your router and a controlled rescan.

Use a network you own or have permission to inspect. Your iPhone must be connected to that network. Have your router’s official app or administration instructions available if you need to check its client list.
Step by step
Check the current connection
Confirm the iPhone is on the Wi-Fi network you intend to inspect. A guest network can be separated from the main network. NetGuard inspects the current local network; it is not a scanner for all nearby Wi-Fi networks.
Allow local-network access
Open NetGuard and allow Local Network access when prompted. If you previously denied it, review the app’s Local Network permission in iPhone Settings. Without the appropriate access, a local scan may show little useful information.
Scan from Devices
Open Devices and run a scan or pull down to refresh. Note the unfamiliar entry’s name, address and last-seen information. Phones, TVs, printers, speakers, smart plugs and network equipment may use model names or generic labels instead of the names you expect.
Open the device details
Tap the entry to inspect available services and identifying clues. Treat a name or service signature as a clue rather than proof of a device’s owner. NetGuard does not expose other devices’ MAC addresses on iOS.
Compare with known equipment
For a nonessential device you control, disconnect it temporarily and rescan. Then reconnect it and compare again. Avoid interrupting shared work, alarms or other equipment people depend on. Sleeping devices and scan timing can make a single comparison inconclusive.
Confirm in the router
Compare the router’s connected-client list using its official instructions. If a device remains unexplained, manage access through the router’s supported controls. NetGuard helps investigate; it does not replace router administration or guarantee that every reachable device will answer a scan.
Why the list may look incomplete
A device may be asleep, on another subnet, behind guest isolation or unwilling to respond. A VPN or network policy may also affect what the phone can reach. Scan results are a view of what the app discovers, not a complete security inventory.
IP addresses can change. Keep that in mind when comparing scans taken at different times. Use multiple clues, including the router’s client information, instead of permanently identifying a device by one address.
What NetGuard can and cannot tell you
Names and advertised services can help you distinguish a printer from a media player or computer. Pro adds tools such as port scanning, device history and exports. A visible service does not by itself establish that a device is vulnerable.
NetGuard does not reveal Wi-Fi passwords or continuously monitor every change in real time. iOS controls background execution, so a background alert should not be treated as an immediate intrusion-detection service.
Questions that come up
Does an unknown name mean someone is stealing my Wi-Fi?
No. Many ordinary devices use generic or unfamiliar names. Compare the entry with your equipment and router before drawing a conclusion.
Why can I not see MAC addresses?
iOS restricts access to other devices’ MAC addresses. NetGuard uses IP addresses, names and service information instead.
Does a scan send all my files anywhere?
A network scan is not a file upload. NetGuard’s scan runs on your device; online tools such as speed tests and public-IP lookup contact external services. The free app also contains advertising, as described in its privacy information.
